AUP Students go to UNESCO

Since its creation in 1945, UNESCO has been committed to realizing the vision of worldwide quality education. A firm believer that all people have the right to education, and that it plays a fundamental role in human, social and economic development. It also works to ensure that information is distributed freely, with no risk to those who provide or seek it. Two recent UNESCO events serve to reinforce this mission.

First-year AUP student Tomislava Tomova organized a meeting at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters, between students from AUP, Sciences Po, and the Sorbonne, as well as with Irina Bokova, the UNESCO Director-General. They first discussed the hurdles faced by young people in their struggle to gain quality education and leadership skills during times of humanitarian crisis and international insecurity. These students are trying to strengthen educational systems in their respective countries and believe that knowledge is crucial to effectively responding to global challenges. As the first woman to head UNESCO, Bokova proves the importance of empowering women as the conversation moves to the advancement of women’s educational rights in areas like Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. The conference ended with the question, “Everybody wants to be a leader in times of peace, but who wants to be a leader in times of crisis?” When asked how to lead well in difficult situations, Bokova explained, “You have to believe in your values. You have to be respectful and at the end of the day, you should never lose sight of your objective. You have to think about communities. Never lose the humanistic vision that you already have. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions, but if you have a strong belief in a particular value system and you think it is the right thing to do, you have to act.”  To learn more, visit our website.

The AUP community is cordially invited to a screening of F. Gary Gray’s controversial 2015 film “Straight Outta Compton." N.W.A's first studio album, "Straight Outta Compton", stirs controversy with its brutally honest depiction of life in Southern Los Angeles. It has received critical acclaim for the attention it draws to racism, while at the same time harsh criticism from feminists for erasing and marginalizing black women.

Justice Stephen Breyer to speak about this new book at AUP
Tuesday, May 3, 2016; 7:00 PM
American Church, 65 Quai d'Orsay, 75007 Paris

The Center for Critical Democracy Studies is pleased to announce that Justice Stephen Breyer will be returning to AUP on May 3rd to speak about his new book on international law, The Court and the World: American Law and the New Global Realities.

The timing of his visit could not be more opportune. The recent death of Justice Scalia and the current battle between the US Senate and the President over the nomination of a new Justice in the context of an unusually heated presidential primary has raised essential questions about the relationship between branches of government in contemporary American democracy. Justice Breyer has consistently been engaged with questions about the politics of certain decisions and his most recent book places these decisions in the global context of the Supreme Court and American law. These questions promise to be even more critical as the Court will be taking on a number of difficult cases in the months ahead, even without a tie-breaker. This event will also afford AUP the opportunity to bestow Justice Breyer with an honorary degree. To learn more, visit our website.

The American University of Paris

AUP is proud to announce its upcoming conference “A Language to Dwell In”: James Baldwin, Paris, and International Visions from 26-28 May 2016.

The conference will represent a broad international and interdisciplinary explorations of Baldwin’s life and writing, with a special emphasis on the Paris he inhabited, both what it was and what it is today as a result of the marks he left behind, and on his experiences in Europe, Africa, and Turkey. Stressing the importance of James Baldwin, the conference hopes to be an international point of intersection for all those interested in Baldwin’s writing from literary and cultural critics, to political activists, poets, musicians, publishers and historians.  We seek the widest range of academic and public intellectual discussion around Baldwin’s work which has influenced so many and so much.
