RICHARD PEÑA DIRECTOR EMERITUS OF THE NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL
Early Independent Black Filmmakers
21 February 2014 19h00
Columbia Global Centers | Europe 4 rue de Chevreuse, Paris 6e

Between about 1915 and the early 1950s, there existed in the United States an independent Black American Cinema, created by and for African-American audiences, existing far outside the purview of mainstream (white) media, and even today known only by a few. Shown at cinemas in African-American neighborhoods or at special hours in more mixed areas, the films ranged from musicals to social dramas to westerns to gangster movies.

Richard Peña recently stepped down after 25 years as Director of the New York Film Festival and Program Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Professor of Film Studies at Columbia University and co-host of Channel 13’s weekly Reel 13, he will speak about this movement, screen one of its movies, The Blood of Jesus (1941, 58 min), and hold a question and answer session with the audience.

A reception follows.

Free and open to the public.
